Questions your doctor may ask

At your first visit, your doctor will most likely ask you a lot of questions, some of which will be personal and may make you feel uncomfortable. Answer all questions as honestly and completely as you can to help your doctor diagnose your symptoms – and remember, whatever you say is only between you and your doctor.

The following are just some of many questions you should be prepared to answer if you are asked:

About your symptoms
  • How would you describe your symptoms?
  • How long have you had symptoms?
  • Have you had these symptoms before?
  • To what degree are your symptoms bothering you?
  • Where are your symptoms located?
  • Do you feel pain and if so, where?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • Are your glands swollen?

About your health history
  • How would you describe your overall health?
  • What illnesses have you had in the past?
  • What treatments have you been given in the past, including medications and surgery?
  • Are you taking any medications now and if so, what?
  • When was the last time you had a physical check up?

About your sexual health history
  • Have you ever had a sexually transmitted infection (STI)?
  • How many sexual partners have you had, recently and during your lifetime?
  • Are you currently in a steady sexual relationship?
  • How often do you engage in sexual activity?
  • Have you received oral sex from a partner with a cold sore?
  • Does your sexual partner have genital herpes?
  • Does your sexual partner have HIV or any other STI?
  • If you know your partner has genital herpes, how long has he or she been infected?
  • Do you practice safer sex – i.e., use a condom every time you are sexually intimate?
  • When you have sex do you have sex with men, women or both?
